Use the Easter/Passover legislative break to reach out to your legislators and share your city story.
(Published Mar 25, 2013)
1. Get Informed.
Members of the state Legislature are in recess until noon on April 2. This break is a great opportunity for your city to provide lawmakers with a better understanding of city services and local community’s needs.
Tell your local legislators about the work your city is doing to serve your residents. The savvy city advocate will maximize this opportunity to spend time with legislators while they are away from the Capitol and near your city.
Meetings with legislators are the key to grassroots success and making a real impact at the Capitol. Face-to-face meetings and tours of local facilities not only enhance local funding requests, but strengthen personal relationships and trust between your city and legislators.
2. Take Action.
Call your legislators today and invite them to your city this week. Invite them to your city hall, city council meeting, or other community gathering. Let them know about the important relationship between the state and local governments in Minnesota. Access contact information for your state legislators
When talking with your state legislators, please advocate for your city and all cities across the state on the following five issues: These were also featured at the League’s breakout session during the Joint Legislative Conference on March 21st.
Street Improvement Districts
Sales Tax Exemption for Local Government Purchases
Local Government Aid (LGA) Reform
Disclosure of Resident Contact Information
If your legislator is able to visit your city, consider including the following items in preparing for the visit:
If you do take time to have contact with your legislators during the break, please let League staff members Heather Cederholm or Laura Ziegler know (see right).
3. Stay Informed.
Weekly: Continue to read the Cities Bulletin at the beginning of each week.
Daily: Check the Third Reading newsfeed (www.lmc.org/3R), which is updated throughout the week and will be for the remainder of the 2013 Legislative Session.
Up-to-the-minute: Follow IGR staff on Twitter for legislative updates as they happen at the Capitol.
You may receive email Action Alerts from League staff throughout the session if your legislator serves on a key committee for legislation affecting cities. We greatly appreciate your willingness to contact your legislators on short notice as bills move through the legislative process.
Make sure you’re signed up for our for finance, telecommunications, elections, housing, and general legislative information.
