The omnibus state budget and veterans affairs budget bill passed off the House floor 73-56 on Saturday.
(Published Apr 22, 2013)
After more than four hours of floor debate, consideration of a few dozen amendments, and reconsideration of final passage, SF 1589 is now on its way back to the Senate for consideration. The Senate passed its own version of the bill 34-32 on Tuesday, April 16. To mitigate House and Senate differences in the bill, it is anticipated that it will go to conference committee and conferees should be appointed today.
The bill is sponsored by Rep. Mary Murphy (DFL-Hermantown) and Sen. Tom Saxhaug (DFL-Grand Rapids). The bill would appropriate $921 million to 28 state agencies and boards and give a 1 percent compensation increase to employees in those agencies.
For more information on the city-specific components of the bill, see this recent Cities Bulletin article detailing the legislation as it was heard in the State Government Finance and Veterans Affairs committee.
